Row over council's Brent libraries claim

Brent council has backtracked on a claim that no local resident is further than 1.5 miles from a library despite six of the borough's libraries closing, according to a report in today's London Evening Standard.

Council leader Ann John had said that despite the controversial closure of Kensal Rise, Cricklewood, Barham Park, Neasden, Preston and Tokyngton libraries, "every resident in Brent will still be within 1.5 miles of one of the six libraries staying open in the borough".

However new maps released by Brent Liberal Democrats showed hundreds of residents in Brent already live more than 1.5 miles from a library since the closure of Barham Park.

Toni McConville, director of customer and community engagement at Brent council, apologised for the "error" in an email seen by the newspaper.

Residents challenging the Brent closures will have their case heard in the court of appeal this week (Thursday 10th and Friday 11th November), after a High Court judgment last month found the closures were not unlawful.
