Academic publisher Routledge is to embark on its most extensive repackaging of its backlist titles, reissuing more than 100 books over the next 12 months.
Routledge Revivals is a new series that looks at taking advantage of key titles from its backlist during the recession and reproducing them using print on demand.
The first 18 titles will be published on 15th July in hardback and vary in price from £50 to £100. The series includes books such as Hermione Lee’s The Novels of Virginia Woolf and Sociology and Philosophy by Émile Durkheim.
Editorial assistant Adam Micklethwaite said Routledge has not re-issued so many individual titles before, tending to focus on series or themes in the past. The publisher said that it anticipated at least 1,000 titles would be re-issued over the next two years. He added: “Routledge has such a rich, distinguished backlist—we would like to make the most of it and make these titles available. With digital printing it seems silly not to.”
He continued: “We have such a distinguished list—it is inevitable that we would use this in the time of an economic recession.”
The majority of the titles will be available through POD services and will also be available for download as e-books. Micklethwaite said that he hoped that the student market will be able to take advantage of the re-issued titles and said that libraries would be a key market.
Although the contents of the book will not be updated, all titles will have a redesigned jacket to create a “brand identity” for the Revivals series. The social science titles will be in a simple green jacket and humanities titles in blue. Mickletwaite said he wanted to give the books a distinct feel and make them stand out among other Routledge titles.
