More than 20,000 adults have signed up to the adult literacy scheme, The Six Book Challenge, its organiser, The Reading Agency, has reported.
Now in its fifth year, 23,500 adults have signed up for the scheme so far, with more anticipated.
Of the total, 12,000 came through public libraries, 6,000 through further education and sixth form colleges, 4,000 through prisons and 1,500 through workplaces.
Six Book Challenge programme manager for The Reading Agency Genevieve Clarke said: "It's fabulous that the Challenge has increased in scale by another 30% this year but there's a long way to go. It's such a simple scheme and yet its impact is enormous."
The annual scheme sees participants pick six reads of their choice and complete a reading diary in order to receive incentives along the way, a certificate and the chance to enter a national prize draw.
