Record entries for indie award
25.02.11 | Graeme Neill
The Bookseller has received a record number of entries to its Best Independent of the Year Award, sponsored by Gardners.
More than 40 indies across the UK and Ireland submitted entries in a bid to win £5,000. The award recognises the devotion, hard work and innovation that goes into running a successful indie. The regional shortlist of 26 independent bookshops can be read below.
Neill Denny, editor in chief at The Bookseller, said: "The sheer volume of entries, of which were at a remarkably high standard, show the independent sector can not only survive but thrive in what has been an incredibly difficult year for bricks and mortar retail."
The winner will be announced at the Bookseller Industry Awards, which will be held at London’s Park Lane Hilton on 16th May.

I'm not familliar with most of these bookshops, but as a bibliophile living in Dublin, I can certainly vouch for The Gutter Bookshop in Temple Bar - it has a really good range for its moderate size, has helpful, friendly staff, and eclectic mix of staff picks and lots of author events, book clubs, poetry readings, etc. Well worth a look in!
I'm from Dublin but funnily enough the one I am familiar with is Woolfson & Tay in Bermondsey London. A fabulous bookshop full of interesting and international titles. Books that I don't come across in other shops and with a great small gallery and coffee shop. They hold great evening events with really interesting themes and if I was living nearby I think I would probably be a very frequent customer.
I can personally say SilverDell bookshop is one of if not the best independent book shop I have ever been to. The staff are so friendly and really do make the shop such a lively and inviting place to buy my books from. They will do pretty much anything to locate books for me, and I know I can be a pain with them sometimes with looking for such obscure books. Not to mention all the fantastic events that they hold. The only independent book shop to host an event with Sir Michael Cain! If this isn't winning material I do not know what is! It isn't well known but Elaine Silverwood part owner of the bookshop takes so many childrens authors into schools around the north west, giving children that spark/push to read! I absolutley love this shop! Every visit I leave with a book or two. I wish my vote could count towards them winning! They truely deserve to win. Dedication to the profession 1000%

I forgot to put my name.
We had to wait a long time for a book shop in Great Harwood and when Pam,s Bookend opened it was like winning the lottery, from the start they have offered a great range of books with excellent service, they are fun, helpfull and supportive of the community its great to see them grow. In todays world of multiples they stand out from the crowd and deserve to be recognised.
