Random House buys human trafficking memoir

Random House has acquired the memoir of how a 15-year-old teenager survived the world of human trafficking.

Arrow editor Julia Twaites bought world rights, excluding US and Canada, from Ampelon Publishing in the US. The Slave Across the Street will be published on 5th September 2013 as a paperback original.

In the book, Theresa Flores tells her story of how, 20 years ago, as an American schoolgirl bought up in a middle-class family, she was drugged, raped and bribed into becoming a sex slave by a boy she went to school with. After two years of abuse she managed to escape and slowly rebuild her life.

Twaites said: "Many of us think of human trafficking as something that only happens in third world countries. The Slave Across the Street shows it can happen and is happening to Western girls. I am delighted that we are publishing Theresa's incredibly story and drawing attention to what these girls have had to endure."
