Quercus is to collaborate with US publisher Sterling on a new imprint for the US and Canadian fiction market. The independent will join with Sterling, a subsidary of book chain Barnes & Noble, to create Silver Oak in an initial three year deal described by Quercus’ founder and chief executive Mark Smith as a "very significant development".
Smith added: "This partnership with one of North America’s leading publishing companies will give us access to the world’s largest fiction market through Sterling’s substantial marketing and promotional resources. Quercus has had a long and productive association with both Sterling and B & N and we look forward to collaborating on this fiction initiative." Smith said he expected Silver Oak to materially contribute to the company's financial results.
The new business, which will be owned equally by Quercus and Sterling, will publish titles selected by the English publisher from its fiction list. Silver Oak will launch in January with the publication of crime novel Three Seconds by Swedish authors Roslund and Hellstrom, which both Quercus and Sterling expect to become a "major bestseller".
Marcus Leaver president of Sterling said: "We are thrilled to introduce Quercus’ first-class fiction list to readers in North America. Quercus is a rapidly growing player in the world of international fiction and we are very confident that Silver Oak’s forthcoming releases will receive the strongest reception in our markets."
