Quercus buys "haunted" debut

Joanne Dickinson, Quercus' paperback publisher, has bought a debut novel based on real events that took place at a "haunted" rectory in the 1920s.

Dickinson acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, in The True Confessions of Lucie Kaye by Neil Spring from Cathryn Summerhayes at WME.

The novel tells of a paranormal detective Harry Price, who investigated ghostly events taking place at Borley Rectory in Essex, which fascinated the nation. Dickinson said Spring's novel was "both fascinating in its historical and social detail, and frankly terrifying in its story of the ghostly events at Borley Rectory".

Spring described his story as "a deeply psychological drama, a collision of history and mystery".
