Pure magic as Harvill lands Frankfurt-bound debut
27.09.10 | Benedicte Page
Harvill Secker has captured rights to one of the big pre-Frankfurt books The Night Circus, a debut novel that is the subject of major bidding wars in overseas territories. Editor Rebecca Carter has pre-empted UK and commonwealth rights from Doubleday US, which has world rights, for "a good six-figure sum".
The novel, by Erin Morgenstern, is set in the late 19th-century and tells the story of two young rival magicians and the fantastical circus in which they compete.
Carter described reading the novel as "like walking through the wardrobe into Narnia, or falling down a rabbit hole. Pure magic."
Acting publishing director Stuart Williams called it "a mesmerising world of magic, rivalry and destiny which is a feast for the imagination and will entrance and delight readers."
The Night Circus will be published in spring 2012.
