Picador to learn Ten Things About Love

Picador has acquired a debut novel, Ten Things I’ve Learnt About Love, after editorial director Francesca Main met the author Sarah Butler at a dinner party.

Main bought world rights in the novel and one other in a two-book deal direct from the author, who is now represented by Andrew Kidd at Aitken Alexander. Picador will publish in spring 2013.

The story is told through the alternating voices of Alice and Daniel, who are very different but have a surprising connection, with the publisher saying the book will explore the relationship between fathers and daughters, as well as themes of rootlessness and homecoming, likely appealing to fans of Anne Tyler, Maggie O’Farrell and Sarah Winman.

Main said: “Many of us in publishing have found ourselves at a dinner party sitting next to someone who is writing a novel—but rarely is the outcome such a delightful stroke of serendipity. This is the most heart-wrenching, captivating and gorgeously evocative novel I have read in ages.”

Butler runs her own consultancy called Urban Words, which develops literature and arts projects that engage with the process of urban regeneration, and was recently writer in residence at Great Ormond Street Hospital.
