Penguin to release £30 Jamie's Great Britain in September
01.01.70 | Philip Jones
A new Jamie Oliver title, Jamie's Great Britain, will be coming from Michael Joseph this September, containing more than 100 new recipes from around the country. The title, to be released on 30th September, will tie into a six-part Channel 4 TV series of the same name, also being broadcast this autumn. The book carries a £30 r.r.p. on the Nielsen biblographic database.
The book will include some British classics, as well as some twists on old favourites, and other original recipes Oliver has made using only British produce. The title will take in wider social and cultural influences on our national grub, as well as food and flavours brought here by those settling in Britain from all over the world.
Penguin c.e.o. Tom Weldon said: "Jamie has a real knack of tapping into the zeitgeist. With the recent Royal Wedding and the forthcoming Olympics, Britain has never been more in the spotlight. Combined with Jamie's passion for his subject and his track record of creating and inspiring and accessible recipes, this cookbook will show there has never been a better time to celebrate British food."
Jamie's 30-Minute Meals, with an r.r.p. of £26, became the bestselling non-fiction hardback in history last year.

Wow - talk about artificially high pricing! Basically this is the publisher saying screw the independent sector, we only expect to sell this through supermarkets, the internet, and chains. One imagines the Bookseller's Chain Retailer of the Year will be doing their bit for the greater trade by shoving it out at about £6.99?
For me, its exactly that. Its got the £30.00 so supermarkets might sell it slightly more then £11 it did with 30 minute meals. For me this title looks set to be possible similar sales like this USA title. Which was one that did not perform.
It will not sell well in South Africa as its focused on specific UK dishes and with Great Britain in the title its all for UK market.
I am sure when it gets launched in the States next year, they may change the name of the book. Call it Jamie's Favourites or Jamie's Great Menu:)
To put a printed rrp of £30.00 on a popularist title like this is a deliberate and cynical attempt to kick-start a price war between the supermarkets and Amazon, one that indies can only observe from the sidelines, once again. Penguin, you should be ashamed yourselves, and in a week where the trade managed to hang on to its last specialist high street bookchain by the skin of its teeth.
