Penguin gains key rights on Snowman

Penguin has taken full ownership of Snowman Enterprises Limited (SEL) and now controls key publishing, film, TV, digital and merchandise rights to the Raymond Briggs children’s character and brand.

Penguin UK c.e.o. Tom Weldon said: "The Snowman’s enduring appeal is testament to the brilliance of Raymond Briggs' original vision. Penguin will continue to build on its enormous popularity and the opportunities that come from this acquisition are huge."

He added: "Penguin’s strategy of increased investment in intellectual property rights very much reflects an ambition to become a new type of publisher, creating original content and products - with storytelling at their heart – across all platforms".

The Snowman created and illustrated by Raymond Briggs has sold in excess of 8.5 million copies worldwide and is available in 15 different languages.

This December will see a sequel to the famous 1982 screen animation of the book, The Snowman and The Snowdog, to premiere on Channel 4. Penguin imprint Puffin will be releasing an audio eBook of The Snowman and The Snowdog read by English actor Benedict Cumberbatch, followed by new publishing in print and digital formats from 2013.
