Penguin has acquired Psychiatry, Our Necessary Shadow, an exploration of the "paradox of pyschiatry—why do we both love it and hate it?".
Penguin Press/Particular Books editorial director Helen Conford bought UK and Commonwealth rights to the book by Tom Burns CBE, professor of social pyschiatry at the University of Oxford.
Signing the deal through Felicity Bryan on exclusive submission, Conford described the work as "a necessary and empathic work, full of balance and clarity, on a subject that is endlessly controversial." The title aims to offer the reader a rounded understanding of psychiatry, its history as well is its current status.
Agent Zoe Pagnamenta will handle US rights and Andrew Nurnberg Associates will sell translation rights at Frankfurt.
The book was bought on proposal, with the full manuscript to be delivered next year. It will be published by Allen Lane.
