Pan Macmillan has acquired a debut thriller, The Informant, written by scriptwriter Susan Wilkins who has worked on programmes including "EastEnders" and "Casualty".
Editorial director Trisha Jackson bought UK and Commonwealth rights in The Informant and an untitled second novel in the series from Jane Gregory at Gregory & Company for an undisclosed sum. The publisher described it as "a smart, well-written and very accessible page-turner set in London . . . a tale of modern villainy exploring the dubious morality operating on both sides of the law."
The book focuses on protagonist Kaz Phelps who is released from jail clean and sober for the first time since she was a child. However, her brother Joey, a psychopathic killer, wants her back as part of the family's criminal gang, while chief superindentent Alan Turnbull wants her to turn informant and help the force catch her brother.
Jackson said: "Susan has an incredible talent for storytelling, plot and character and it's rare to find a debut with such brilliantly drawn characters. Her scriptwriting background is evident-the novel is made for film/TV."
Pan Macmillan will publish in July 2014.
