Pan Macmillan has acquired Off the Leash: The Secret Life of Dogs by cartoonist Rupert Fawcett, with plans to publish in September 2013.
Publisher Jon Butler pre-empted world rights from agent Louise Burns at the Andrew Mann agency, in a London Book Fair deal.
The title ties in with Fawcett's daily blog, Off the Leash, which has more than 150,000 followers. The book will be a collection of the funniest and most touching cartoons, which all depict dogs.
Butler said: "I've long been on the lookout for a talented artist who could come up with something as fresh, funny and well-observed as Simon's Cat, but for dogs . . . I love Rupert's work, and the speed at which his fanbase is growing and actively sharing the cartoons around the world is very exciting. Rupert published several books with Boxtree back in the 1990s, and we're thrilled to have him back on the list."
