The Publishers Association and Audio Publishers Association are to collaborate on a new campaign against the VAT on audio books and e-books. Earlier this year EU ministers voted to allow all 27 EU member states to charge 5% VAT on books that have a "physical means of support".
Following a meeting with The Treasury to discuss the issue, PA chief executive Simon Juden said that the "initial approach to the Treasury had not born fruit", so a different approach would be taken. He said that the organisisations would now "gather and form an economic argument" to back a campaign on the matter.
Juden said that the PA has been working closely with the Audio Publishers Association and the Royal National Institute of Blind People. "We have been arguing that audio books and e-books should benefit from reduced VAT rates."
