OUP is to release an updated tie-in to the forthcoming Daniel Craig film, "Defiance", which is adapted from true story Defiance: The Bielski Partisans by Nechama Tec.
The original title was published by OUP US in 1993. Rights for the film were bought in 2007 by Momentum Pictures and it was written and produced by Edward Zwick ("Blood Diamond"). The updated title (pb, £7.99, 9780195385236) has been repackaged as a new book with new ISBN, and will include historic photographs, interviews with key survivors and a foreword by Zwick.
Defiance is the story of a community of Jewish resistance fighters in Nazi-occupied Poland who formed the largest rescue operation of Jews by Jews during the Second World War. Their leader, Tuvia Bielski, granted Tec his last-ever interview, which formed the basis of Defiance.
The film will be released in the UK in January, with book publication set for 11th December.
Promotion for the title is to be confirmed, although a spokesperson from Momentum commented that "there will be a big publicity campaign using the significant angle that it is a true story and based on the book".
Defiance is OUP's second venture into film tie-ins, with the first being Sweeney Todd in 2007.
