Orchard acquires Cleopatra titles

Orchard Books has bought two historical fiction titles about the life of the young Cleopatra, written by Lucy Coats.

Senior editor Rosalind Turner acquired UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Sophie Hicks. The first book, provisionally titled Young Cleopatra, will hit the market in spring 2015 and the second book will follow later in the year.

“Everyone at Orchard was captivated by the idea of the untold story of Cleopatra, and Lucy Coats is the perfect author to lead us into this evocative world,” said Turner.

Coats was one of Orchard Books’ first editors and said she is delighted to “come home” with the novels.

“The inspiration for my Cleopatra books came directly from wondering what relationship the young princess would have had with her Egyptian gods, and what her teenage life might have been like before she became queen,” she said. “Cleo quickly became an insistent voice filling my head, practically ordering me to tell her story.”

Coats’ first book, One Hungry Baby, was also published by Orchard in 1993.
