Independent publisher Oneworld has acquired two titles, one looking at the latest Afghan war and the other going to the borders of scientific discovery.
Commissioning editor Mike Harpley bought world English language rights to No Worse Enemy: The Inside Story of Our Chaotic Struggle for Afghanistan by Ben Anderson, through Melissa Pimental at Curtis Brown.
Anderson is a journalist, presenter and documentary maker for BBC1's "Panorama", Channel 4 "Dispatches" and HBO, and he has had "unrivalled access to UK and US troops" over the past five years.
Harpley said: "Ben Anderson's remarkable access to UK troops and US marines, and his fearless desire to be at the heart of any major battle, makes this the must-read account of the conflict in Afghanistan . . . It's compelling reading, and the fact that it's informed by over 300 hours of Ben's own film footage with the troops lends it an extraordinary intimacy".
Oneworld plans to publish in hardback in October.
Meanwhile, editor Robin Dennis acquired world English language rights from Peter Tallack at The Science Factory to My Beautiful Genome: Discovering our Genetic Future, One Quirk at a Time.
Written by science writer Lone Frank, the book reveals her confrontation with the new era of genomics, as she explores her own genetic make up following her father's death.
Dennis said: "As a science editor, I've seen many proposals about personal genomics over the years-but none of them grabbed me as Lone's did. She explores all the big players and the cutting-edge research, but more than that, she's wonderfully honest, challenging and funny."
Oneworld will publish in September in the UK.
