OFT decision on Amazon merger due Friday

The Office of Fair Trading has postponed its ruling on the merger between Amazon and The Book Depository until Friday (2nd September).

Originally the OFT had scheduled to announce today (30th August) whether it considered the merger substantially lessened competition within the UK book market and should be referred to the Competition Commission for investigation.

In July when the OFT investigation was announced, several bodies within the book industry came out to publically oppose the merger. These included the Booksellers Association, the Publishers Association, the Independent Publishers’ Guild, the Bookseller Group and the Society of Authors, which argued Amazon already had a dominant position in the bookselling market.
