Nick Hern Books is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year with an anthology of contributions from playwrights, actors and directors about their first play experiences.
My First Play is published on 4th July as a £9.99 paperback and features contributions from Howard Benton, Caryl Churchill and David Edgar among others. Publisher Nick Hern says the book is a “great way of celebrating our writers . . . when people write about childhood and first experiences they write in an innocent, unguarded way and their stories are really heart-felt.”
Other marketing plans for the publisher’s anniversary include a panel event at the Almeida Theatre in Islington on 6th June, a year-long 25% discount offer on all titles on the NHB website, and the chance to win theatre tickets.
Hern said the plan for the next 25 years is to “survive”. He added: “Reading about Amazon’s move into publishing—they have been the salvation of small publishers. But they are killing bookshops and now I think they are going to be killing publishers.
“We have got to stay light on our feet. But I think the theatre world will survive because electronic media cannot swamp the theatre—it is a live event”.
