New Summerscale to Bloomsbury

Bloomsbury has acquired the new book by Kate Summerscale, the author perhaps best known for The Suspicions of Mr Whicher.

Editor in chief Alexandra Pringle acquired UK & Commonwealth rights to the book, The Electrical Boy, from David Miller at Rogers, Coleridge & White, with Colin Dickerman acquiring North American rights for Penguin Press from Melanie Jackson.

The new title is described by the agent as "a portrait of the murder of a Victorian woman by her son and its aftermath. The story moves from working class life in London's East end through the Old Bailey court system, from Holloway Prison and Broadmoor to the battlefields of World War One and Australia, illuminating changing attitudes towards criminal responsibility, mental illness, and the possibilities for a murderer of redemption."

Laurence Laluyaux at RCW will be handling foreign rights and Julia Kreitman at the Agency continues to represent film and television rights.
