New plans for Cambridge libraries

Cambridgeshire county council is set to announce new library plans in September, with book "vending" machines at train stations and park and ride sites potentially on the cards.

An online ordering and delivery service, similar to the film rental website Lovefilm, is also a possibility, according to a report in the Cambridge Evening News.

New county council leader Nick Clarke said "he believed more than £1m could be found for libraries", previously facing £3.2m cuts over five years. Clarke also said the 13 libraries threatened with closure might not remain in the same buildings but that a "library service" would be on offer to all their communities. Libraries sharing premises with other services or private companies is said to be high on the council's list of priorities.

Previously approved ideas such as greater use of volunteers and self-service machines, the sharing of backroom services with other counties, and staff restructuring are still expected to go ahead. However, Clarke said: "At the end of the process we could end up with one of the best library services in the country."
