National Literacy Trust launches Christmas appeal

The number of children who do not own a book is increasing, the National Literacy Trust has said, while launching its Christmas "Gift of Reading" fundraising appeal.

The NLT released highly publicised statistics in June showing that one child in three does not own a book of their own.

Launching its Christmas Gift of Reading appeal today (5th December), the NLT highlighted that this figure represents an increase on seven years ago, when it was only one child in 10.

The appeal asks for donations to give a disadvantaged child a book of their own for the first time.
