National Libraries Day could become a 'week of events'

A first planning meeting is to be held to establish a National Libraries Day, after widespread support for the idea from organisations including the Booksellers Association, the National Union of Teachers, Booktrust, the Society of Authors, the Royal Society of Literature, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (Cilip), and Voices for the Library.

Author Alan Gibbons, of Campaign for the Book, said the event would follow on from Save Our Libraries Day, which saw over 100 events take place on 5th February, and would “highlight the importance of reading for pleasure and to promote the work of public libraries, school libraries and School Library Services”.

Early indications suggest supporting bodies would like “a week of events leading up to a Saturday of celebrations including storytelling, read-ins and poetry sessions,” he added.

The inaugural planning meeting will be held on 26th May at Cilip’s London headquarters.
