Manga and graphic novels publisher SelfMadeHero has ventured into a different genre, acquiring the Moomins Cookbook for publication later this year.
Editor Emma Hayley bought world English rights from the Finnish publisher WSOY for an undisclosed sum, in a deal that was finalised this week. The book is due out as a £12.99 hardback in July. "We spotted the book at Frankfurt Book Fair, and made an offer soon after, so we were quick off the draw," said Hayley. "I grew up with the Moomins and they are a real nostalgia thing for adults, so I’m delighted these cute little creatures are enjoying a renaissance."
Illustrations are by the late creator of the series Tove Jansson, whose first Moomin book was published in 1945. More than 150 Finnish "forest" recipes have been created by "Scandinavian foodie" Sami Malila, who was also a collaborator on books including Moomin Troll’s Nature Path, Moominvalley Gardening Book and Moomin Quotation Book.
