Mitch Winehouse memoir to HC
10.10.11 | Graeme Neill
HarperCollins has bought rights to a memoir by the father of late soul singer Amy Winehouse.
Nick Canham, editorial director for Harper Non-Fiction, bought UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, to Amy, My Daughter by Mitch Winehouse, from Maggie Hanbury at the Hanbury Agency.
Lisa Sharkey, senior vice-president and director for creative development at HarperCollins US bought North American rights from Robin Straus at the Robin Straus Agency in conjunction with Maggie Hanbury. The book will be published worldwide in summer 2012.
Winehouse will discuss the life of his daughter, through childhood, her rise to fame through her breakthrough album Back to Black and her struggle with addiction.
Proceeds from the book will go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which has been set up to to help children and young adults facing difficulty and adversity.
Canham said: "Amy Winehouse was a once-in-a-generation star whose legacy will last for decades. Her untimely and tragic death has left a void in the hearts of all her fans. The strength Mitch Winehouse has shown over recent months is truly admirable. His desire to create a definitive account of Amy's life, that will solely benefit the foundation he has established in her name, is something that we are incredibly proud to be part of.
"Amy, My Daughter will be a must read for Amy's legions of fans, and also a heart-breaking account of a father's love for his lost daughter that will speak to any parent."
Winehouse said: "I feel that I need to write this book to tell the true story of Amy and to help with my personal recovery."
