McGuinness in running for Authors Club prize

Patrick McGuinness' tale of the final days of Ceaușescu, the Man Booker longlisted-The Last Hundred Days has been shortlisted for the Authors' Club Best First Novel Award 2012.

McGuinness is joined by The Knife Drawer by Padrika Tarrant (Salt), with two Random House Group titles, the Costa-shortlisted City of Bohane by Kevin Barry (Vintage) and Leela's Book by Alice Albinia (Harvill Secker) also in the running. The list is completed by A Book for All and None by Clare Morgan (W&N).

The five titles were picked by a panel of Authors' Club members, chaired by critic Suzi Feay, "after an intense and wide-ranging debate, from an exceptionally strong longlist".

The winner will be announced on 6th June by guest adjudicator, novelist and critic D J Taylor. A shortlist reading will be hosted at Foyles Charing Cross Road on 16th May.

The 2011 award went to Jonathan Kemp for London Triptych, with previous winners also including Alan Sillitoe and Jackie Kay. It was founded in 1954.
