MCB creates animated e-book cover for Chitty
20.09.11 | Caroline Horn
Macmillan Children's Books has created an animated cover for the e-book of Frank Cottrell Boyce's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Flies Again, which it hopes will attract the interest of bloggers.
The covers can be seen at www.chittyfliesagain.com. The book itself will be published on Friday 7th October.
Macmillan said the Chitty cover will be the first of a number of animated book jackets which it is creating specifically for online viewing to give bloggers “a unique way of displaying book covers".
The new Chitty story, illustrated by Joe Berger, is set in the present day. At the heart of the book is the Tooting family who discover a massive, ancient racing-car engine and use it to soup up their VW camper van. Before they know it, they are zooming around the world as Chitty comes to life again and is restored to her former glory.
The MCB moving book covers were designed by MCB's fiction art director, Rachel Vale. She said: "The face of publishing is changing at an ever-increasing pace. With so much emphasis on all things digital I am keen to ensure cover design doesn't get left behind. The possibilities in animating existing print covers are endless, and we are only at the
beginning of a very, very exciting journey."
