Mauger to urge WI to campaign for libraries
24.05.11 | Benedicte Page
Annie Mauger, chief executive of CILIP, is to call on the Women's Institute to campaign for public libraries when she addresses the organisation's annual general meeting in Liverpool on 8th June.
The WI, which has a 210,000 member network, has a long history of campaigning, including on issues such as climate change, violence against women and the plight of the honey bee. A select number of issues are debated at each AGM, and if passed, form the basis of future campaign activities.
Mauger said she was "absolutely thrilled" to be invited to speak. "The WI has an impressive track record of campaigning and lobbying on some really important issues and I hope they begin campaigning in support of public libraries," she said.
"Libraries are at the heart of our communities. They are an essential education and information resource. Without them we will have a less equal, more illiterate and more ignorant society."
