Mantel shortlisted for Costa

Fourth Estate author Hilary Mantel could be adding to her awards haul this year with a shortlisting for the Costa Novel Award 2012 for her Booker-winning novel Bring Up the Bodies.

She is up against Stephen May's Life! Death! Prizes! (Bloomsbury) and James Meek's The Heart Broke In (Canongate). Completing the shortlist is Joff Winterhart's graphic novel Days of the Bagnold Summer (Cape).

Winterhart's is one of two graphic novels shortlisted for a Costa, with fellow Cape title Dotter of Her Father’s Eyes by Mary Talbot and Bryan Talbot up for best Biography.

The Costa Book Awards recognise the most enjoyable books in five categories—First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book—published in the last year by writers based in the UK and Ireland.

Each category winner, who will receive £5,000, will be announced on 2nd January 2013.  The overall winner of the Costa Book of the Year 2012 will receive £30,000, and is announced at the Costa Book Awards ceremony in central London on 29th January 2013.

The winner of the inaugural Costa Short Story Award, voted for by the public, will also be announced at the ceremony. The six shortlisted stories will be revealed on the Costa Book Awards website,, on 27th November.
