Nick Lane's title explaining the 10 greatest events of evolution, Life Ascending, has won the £10,000 Royal Society Prize for Science Books.
The Profile Books title beat five others on the shortlist including A World Without Ice by Henry Pollack (Avery Books) and We Need to Talk ABout Kelvin by Marcus Chown (Faber).
Maggie Philbin, chair of the judges said: “Life Ascending is a beautifully written and elegantly structured book that was a favourite with all of the judges."
Lane was awarded the £10,000 prize last night (21st October). It was revealed earlier this week that the 22-year-old prize faces closure unless it can find a commerical sponsor.
Lane said: "I’ve been following the prize since its inception and I know it’s the highlight of the year for many scientists.
"The prize stands for getting the best science to the widest audience possible and I hope that it attracts funding next year and continues for as long as possible."
