Landmark to join Junglee in offering India e-books

India's biggest bookselling chain will soon begin selling e-books via a redesigned website.

Landmark, a subsidiary of the Tata Group, has 30 stores in India selling books and music. A new transactional website designed by UK company Tangent Snowball will now seek to "take advantage of the huge growth opportunities in the Indian online market" and will begin selling e-books and offering music downloads as part of a “phase two roll-out” later this year.

Ashutosh Pandey, chief operating officer at Landmark, said: "The online retail market in India is a very long way from maturity, with enormous growth potential and great opportunities for companies that can come in early and get it right. While the market is still young, India is a country with enormous potential and we feel that Landmark, which already has the biggest high street book and music presence in the country, is now on course to achieve the same online."

Meanwhile Amazon's newly launched India e-commerce site Junglee.com is now selling Kindle e-books, telling customers they have access to "over 9 Lakh titles" — Lakh being a term meaning "100,000".

Junglee.com launched on 2nd February, with the platform allowing Amazon and third party sellers to vend 12 million products by over 14,000 Indian and global brands including books, electrical products, clothes, jewellery and home products.
