Kobo chief content officer Michael Tamblyn's speech at The Bookseller's FutureBook conference, "Infinite Shades of Grey: The Promise and Peril of Self-Publishing", can now be viewed here.
In the hugely well-received speech, Tamblyn gave his account of how the company responded to the furore over offensive self-published titles, which saw W H Smith's website taken down for nine days.
Tamblyn said that while Kobo did not want to sell such books, the company was also aware of the dangers of censorship.
He said: "The natural promise of self-publishing is 'yes'. Whether it's good or bad or tin-foil hat crazy or deviant or groundbreaking, it's all possible . . . we will wrestle with the danger and significance of saying no, and enjoy the power and the promise of saying yes."
