Campaigners trying to create a community library in Kensal Rise have raised nearly half the money they need to put forward their proposals, with just under three weeks to go until the deadline.
The Friends of Kensal Rise Library need to raise £70,000 by 7th September, enough money for their first year’s operating costs, in order to put forward their business plan to All Souls College, Oxford, the owner of the building.
After Brent Council closed the library, in spite of protests from the Friends group, the college took control of the building.
So far, the Friends have raised more than £28,000 in less than a week. Ultimately, they hope the library will be self-sustainable.
The Friends are offering incentives to potential givers, who can have their names recorded in the library should it be opened. People who dontate £20 can sponsor a book, or for £50, a chair. There are a range of different levels of pledge. For £300, givers can sponsor a shelf, while people who give £1,000 will have their names written on the walls.
If the bid is unsuccessful, the pledges will not be collected.
