Orion publishing director Kate Mills is to join HarperCollins in the newly created role of publishing director of HQ.
She will join HQ later in the summer to commission commercial fiction, including crime, women’s fiction and book club titles.
Mills joined Orion in 2002, having previously worked at Little Brown and the Book Club Associates. During her time at Orion she published the Labyrinth by Kate Mosse and Julia Gregson’s East of the Sun. Recent bestsellers include the James Bond novel Trigger Mortis by Anthony Horowitz, Song of the Skylark by Erica James, Veronica Henry’s High Tide and Maureen Lee’s first-ever number one, The Kelly Sisters.
Mills said: “I’m hugely excited about the chance to build a new commercial fiction list with the strength and expertise of HarperCollins behind it. Both Lisa Milton and Charlie Redmayne have already shown they are committed to creating a dynamic, innovative and competitive imprint and I’m very much looking forward to working with the team there to grow the list. Although it’s incredibly hard to say goodbye to my authors, it’s been an absolute privilege to publish them, and I know they will be well looked after by the brilliant team at Orion.”
Harlequin UK executive publisher Lisa Milton said: “We are absolutely delighted that Kate is joining the HQ team and can’t wait for her to start in mid-September. With her incredible skill and experience, Kate is a great addition to our team. With space to acquire across the commercial fiction market, Kate will be building her list and leading our fiction editorial team. Great publishing always starts with great books, and with Kate joining I feel very confident that we can continue to find incredible new voices whilst growing quickly and profitably. We’re aiming high.”
