Jonathan Cape has acquired world English rights excluding Canada and the USA in two novels written by Remainder author Tom McCarthy.
Editor Alex Bowler made the two-book deal with Jonathan Pegg for C and Satin Island.
Cape will publish C in September 2010 alongside Knopf in the US. C is the story of Serge Carrefax, a young man who is born at the beginning of the 20th century; the novel follows him through the First World War, 1920s London and to the ancient tombs of Egypt; according to the publisher, Serge is "quickly steeped in the weird emergent technologies and seductive new machinery of the day . . . When personal tragedy strikes, Serge’s scientific passions shade into something darker."
Bowler said: "Remainder was one of the finest novels of the decade. But C surpasses it—playful, razor sharp, thrilling. I’m delighted that he’s with us for at least two books and am convinced that his voice will become one of the most influential and distinctive in English fiction. This is a very, very special deal for Cape. We’re taking on so few new acquisitions, but we had to have Tom McCarthy. It completes the list".
Remainder, McCarthy's first novel, was published by a small Paris art press before being published by Vintage in the US. It was published by Alma Books in the UK and Film4 is developing it for cinema.
