John Lewis has been named as the first retailer to sell Barnes & Noble’s Nook e-reader in the UK.
B&N said the retailer, with 37 stores in the UK, will sell B&N’s e-ink nook devices, the Nook Simple Touch and the Simple Touch with Glowlight, in its stores and on its website. A date was not given for when the devices would go on sale in John Lewis, apart from in “autumn”. B&N announced last Monday (20th August) it would begin to sell Nook devices in the UK through www.nook.co.uk from mid-October.
Jamie Iannone, president of digital products at Barnes & Noble, said: “John Lewis is where knowledgeable customers turn for trusted advice on the best products to purchase, and they are a perfect partner to help launch Nook in the UK. We look forward to bringing more choice and convenience to discerning UK customers with our critically acclaimed line of reading devices and expansive selection of content.”
Ed Connolly, director of buying for electricals and home technology at John Lewis, said the company was “thrilled” to be chosen as the “premier UK launch retailer” for the Nook, adding that he thought John Lewis customers would “love Nook's adaptability”, referring to its e-ink and glow light features which allows customers to read in the dark.
B&N added that the e-readers would be “prominently displayed” in John Lewis electronics aisles and on its website. John Lewis already sells the Kindle and Kobo devices.
Last week, The Bookseller reported that John Lewis was one of the retailers most likely to partner with B&N, along with Foyles, Carphone Warehouse and Tesco. Analysts predicted this autumn could mark a digital step change for the industry.
