John Murray Press Learning has signed a textbook and video series from Mike Hainzinger, whose "Chinese with Mike" language lessons have become an online hit on YouTube.
The JMP imprint will release seasons one and two of Chinese with Mike in the Teach Yourself Languages range in July 2014 as a textbook and video series, as well as launching a dedicated website, www.chinesewithmike.com. An integrated e-book will also be available, with further seasons released later in the year along with app versions.
Hainzinger, known as Mike Lǎoshī, or Teacher Mike online, is assistant professor of Mandarin and English at Joliet Junior College in Illinois.
He began broadcasting short video lessons from his garage in 2010, attracting more than one million viewers. His lessons, designed to be fun and memorable, have been praised by international universities and are used by Australian educational services as part of a digital education curriculum.
Sarah Cole at John murray Press Learning acquired world rights, with McGraw-Hill Professional set to distribute in the US.
Hainzinger said: "If you’re thinking that a one-car garage isn’t the ideal classroom to learn the language of the future, guess again. It’s worked for a million others, and now it’s your turn."
