Little, Brown has acquired a novel set in 1850 aboard a ship bound for the Arctic, written by Jeremy Page, whose previous two novels were published by Viking.
Publishing director Clare Smith bought world rights in The Collector of Lost Things by Jeremy Page from Karolina Sutton at Curtis Brown. Little, Brown foreign rights director Andy Hine is managing translation rights and rights manager Kate Hibbert will handle North America. Little, Brown will publish in 2013.
The book is described by the publisher as "a love story and a quest", telling the story of the young Eliot Saxby who is bent on rescuing the Great Auk, a species of bird, from extinction. However, the complicated relationships and conflicts on board threaten to overwhelm him.
Smith said: "It's not often you are lucky enough to find lyrical, passionate writing combined with an intensely complex plot—Jeremy's move into historical fiction has given us the most stunning novel to publish."
Page has been a script editor and writer for FilmFour and the BBC, in addition to teaching on the Creative Writing MA at the University of East Anglia.
