One James Patterson fan will be able to purchase a self-destructing version of James Patterson’s new novel Private Vegas – for almost $300,000.
As part of the promotion for the book, published in the UK by Century and released on 1st January, 1,000 fans will also be able to read a free, digital version, but will only have 24 hours to do so before it disappears.
The campaign for the book, which is released on 26th January in the US by Little, Brown and Company, has been put together by advertising agency Mother New York, which said: “For the launch of James Patterson’s new book, we decided to take the usual thrill of reading one of his novels to an unprecedented height and make his fans read against the clock.
“We created The Self-Destructing Book. The most thrilling reading experience ever. Patterson’s fans have just 24 hours to read his new book, Private Vegas, before it destructs itself.”
One fan, who will pay $294,038, will get a private trip to an “undisclosed luxury location, a five-course dinner with Patterson, gold binoculars to read from a safe distance and a SWAT team for book handling”.
Fans can visit The Self-Destructing Book website to find out more information, and get a code to read the digital version of the book. The first batch of codes will be released today. Only US readers can access the codes.
