Atlantic editor-in-chief Ravi Mirchandani has acquired world rights to Alveridgea and The Legend of the Lonely Dog by Ivan Clarke, a book which first appeared in New Zealand as a limited edition of just 95 copies, sold to collectors through the author’s website and art gallery for $30,000.
It will be repackaged for general readers, keeping much of its "striking" artwork, and published by Atlantic in summer 2010.
Mirchandani called the book, a retelling of the Ugly Duckling story, "a children’s fable for grown-ups" and "one of those unique works of the imagination that enchants the reader by taking him or her into a fully realized world".
Warner Bros has acquired the screen rights.
