Hodder & Stoughton has bought a debut historical crime novel, Plague Land by S D Sykes, a recent graduate of the Curtis Brown Creative writing course.
Nick Sayers bought UK and Commonwealth rights in three books from Curtis Brown agent Gordon Wise.
Plague Land is set in a Kent village in the 14th century, and portrays a society trying to deal with the traumatic effects of the Black Death—as well as murder. Young lord of the manor Oswald de Lacy is the hero.
Sayers said: "Sarah is such a lively writer; apart from loving the period that she writes about, she has a feel for people and places—and a sense of humour too. I think these books are going to give a lot of readers a lot of pleasure."
Hodder will publish in autumn 2014.
