Hodder and Stoughton has signed up Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall to write a book to accompany an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum in 2010. Nicky Ross, editorial director of illustrated and lifestyle books at Hodder, bought world rights from Barbara Levy, agent at the Imperial War Museum.
The Real Ministry of Food will draw on information put out by the wartime Ministry of Food, when campaigns such as Dig For Victory and War on Waste helped to keep Britain healthy during the Second World War. The title has thrifty ways to feed a family, from growing veg and composting, to frugal recipes, baking and preserving. The book will be published in February 2010 to coincide with the opening of The Real Ministry of Food exhibition at the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth.
"We're delighted to have Jane on board," said Ross. "A cook and a gardener, she's the perfect author for the book and is drawing on the incredible archive of the Imperial War Museum as well as her own memories of post-war rationing and delicious recipes created from a very basic store-cupboard and what could be grown in the garden."
Fearnley-Whittingstall is a garden designer and has won two gold medals at Chelsea Flower Show. She has previously written books on gardening and titles including The Good Granny Guide: Or How to Be a Modern Grandmother (Short Books). She is also the mother of celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.
