Hodder Education is to launch its first-ever app - a Michel Thomas language learning app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
The app, based on the Michel Thomas Method language courses, will be available to buy through the App Store from 21st May.
George Walkley, head of digital for Hachette UK, said: "Hodder Education’s Michel Thomas application is the most advanced app developed for the Hachette UK group to date.
"Hodder Education and developers Berg have created a compelling, interactive way for iPhone users to learn a new language, and the release of this app is a significant step in the group’s digital publishing."
The app will initially cover French, German, Italian and Spanish and be available to buy and build up in hour-long chunks. The app is free to download and contains previews of each language course, then the first three hours of each course are £2.99 per hour and the final chunk, comprising the fourth to eighth hours, costs £8.99.
The app will be updated with access to eight other languages, which will be released throughout the rest of the year. Prices are the same for all languages.
Vivian Marr, editorial director for languages at the consumer learning division of Hodder Education, said: "Michel’s method – no books, no pens, no memoriising – is perfect for the app world so Hodder Education is building on his huge popularity and success rate and opening up new markets by adapting the content for a range of digital platforms, starting with the iPhone."
The app will feature an animated 'Learning Room' with tactile graphics, as well as a flash card game that can be personalised for fast practice.
