Hodder Children’s is holding a blog celebration this month to mark the completion of publication of its HodderSilver list.
HodderSilver brings back children's sci-fi classics in digital form.
The online celebration includes publication of a free e-book sampler today (Thursday 4th September) containing extracts from Adele Geras’ Troy, Jan Mark’s The Ennead, Nicholas Fisk’s Starstormers and Jean Ure’s Plague 99. Each of these titles will also be promoted at 99p on all of the publisher’s digital platforms for a two-week period from 4th September.
HodderSilver’s Tumblr blog will feature three weeks of posts including features by Silver authors Jean Ure and Adele Geras, reminiscences from Robert Swindells and Tony Lacey (Jan Mark’s first editor, now publishing director at Penguin), as well as a piece from author Judy Allen and a short story from writer Nicholas Fisk.
Jon Appleton, editorial director at Hodder Children’s Books, described the blog activity as “a celebration of the latter part of the second golden age of children’s books – the 1970s, when so many of today’s most distinguished writers began their careers. A time when paperbacks stopped being frowned upon and opened up reading to thousands of children in homes and libraries. A time when the Puffin Club was at its peak and children got to meet their favourite writers face to face. A time when escapist reading was an antidote to a bleak world of strikes, terrorism, three-day weeks and very, very creepy films.”
The blog celebration will run until Friday 19th September, with a concluding post inviting further contributions.
The HodderSilver list launched in May with Catweazle by Richard Carpenter and Journey Through Llandor by Louise Lawrence, as well as The Ennead, Starstormers and Plague 99 (£2.99 each).
