HarperCollins Children’s Books has acquired “wonderfully funny” teen fiction series Geek Girl after a “fiercely contested” five-way auction.
Commissioning editor Elizabeth Ryley bought world rights to the series by debut author Holly Smale in a three-book deal via Kate Shaw at The Viney Agency.
Geek Girl follows self-confessed geek Harriet Manners as she struggles with adolescence and navigates the “glamorous yet ridiculous” world of modeling. Smale, a former model herself, blogs at thewritegirl.co.uk.
Ryley said: "I’m thrilled to bring the wonderfully funny Holly Smale to our award‐winning, bestselling fiction list. I was captivated by Holly's sparkling dialogue and ultra‐real portrayal of teen experience.
"As the home of Louise Rennison, HarperCollins Children's Books are dedicated to building global teen brands. Geeks could not be hotter right now and Geek Girl is the perfect launch for the zeitgeist of geekery!"
HCCB will publish the first title in spring 2013.
