Harvill acquires memoir of Politkovskaya sister
08.10.12 | Charlotte Williams
Harvill Secker has acquired a memoir about murdered Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, written by her sister, Elena Kudimova.
Associate publisher Stuart Williams bought world rights in the as-yet-untitled book from Toby Eady, with plans to publish in spring 2014.
Politkovskaya was a special correspondent for the Russian newspaper Novaya gazeta, and the recipient of many honours for her writing. She authored A Dirty War, Putin's Russia, A Russian Diary and Nothing But The Truth. Politkovskaya was murdered in Moscow in October 2006.
Williams said: "This memoir of Anna Politkovskaya’s life and work will include the words of three generations of her relations—her mother, her sister Elena, and her daughter. It describes the woman behind the often misleading public image, how she became what she became, and what it was to live with someone who habitually put herself in harm’s way and resisted entreaties to leave Russia.
"It is both a portrait of a singular journalist and a book about the darkness of contemporary Russia."
