Television presenter and DJ Lauren Laverne is to write a trilogy of teenage novels following a deal with HarperCollins. World rights were bought by publisher Ann-Janine Murtagh from Paul Stevens at Independent Talent for an undisclosed sum. The publisher has not revealed its schedule for publication.
The trilogy, as yet untitled, follows a 15 year old girl who is determined to escape her dull and mundane life and make it big as a rock star. On her way to stardom she is determined to track down her unknown father, known as BioDad and who might also be famous too. With the help of her Fairy Godbrother, the heroine sets off on an adventure that will take her all the way to Glastonbury.
Ann-Janine Murtagh said: "Lauren Laverne is an exceptional talent in every way, and I was absolutely knocked out by the quality and depth of her writing. She has created a new heroine who is endearing and funny with a wonderfully original and authentic voice. This is an extraordinary debut as an author and marks the emergence of a major new writing talent."
Laverne said: "When I was a kid, all I ever wanted to be was an author. To be writing a book of my own is absolutely wonderful (and, like most things worth doing, occasionally terrifying). I am also delighted to be working with HarperCollins, the very best in the business. Their support has been invaluable."
Laverne is a DJ on BBC 6 Music but has previously presented shows such as CD:UK, The Culture Show, The Brits, Glastonbury, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, The Mercury Prize and Channel 4’s Transmission. Before her career in broadcasting, which began with a five year stint on indie radio station XFM, Laverne was lead singer of cult indie group Kenickie.
