HarperCollins Children's Books has bought world rights in a "major" pre-empt for the debut YA novel by 18-year-old Alice Oseman, whose work is said to have been inspired by blogging sites and social media.
Commissioning editor Elizabeth Clifford and Erica Sussman, executive editor at HarperTeen, bought Solitaire and one further novel from Claire Wilson at Rogers, Coleridge and White.
Solitaire tells of an alienated 16-year-old, Tori, whose school is targeted by Solitaire, an online community of activists. Clifford said Oseman was an "exceptional" talent, called Solitaire "sharply funny, devastatingly self-deprecating and whip-smart;…the perfect story for the Instagram Tumblr generation."
Oseman is joining Durham university this autumn to read English. The book will be published next summer.
