Hachette Book Group in the US has entered into an agreement to buy illustrated book and creative non-fiction publisher Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers.
The purchase will be completed in the “next several months”, said HBG, subject to meeting the closing conditions.
Black Dog & Leventhal will then become an imprint of HBG’s newest division, Hachette Books, led by publisher Mauro DiPreta.
J P Leventhal, Black Dog & Leventhal’s publisher, will continue as publisher of the imprint, and the company’s management will remain in place, with Rebecca Koh promoted to the position of editorial director, and Maureen Winter becoming associate publisher.
HBG c.e.o. Michael Pietsch said: “I’m very excited to bring Black Dog & Leventhal to Hachette. J P Leventhal and his team have developed an excellent reputation worldwide for their creative, diverse list of non-fiction and illustrated visual books, a list that fits perfectly inside our Hachette Books division. The addition of the BD&L publishing program will enhance our non-fiction and backlist portfolios, important areas of focus for HBG, and will expand our strength in specialty retail stores and museum shops.”
Leventhal said, “We are thrilled to be working with the wonderful international family of Hachette companies, and especially we look forward to expanding Black Dog & Leventhal’s list and being a part of Hachette Book Group’s goal of building an ever stronger presence in non-fiction publishing.”
